Firing Squad - DC

I’ve really enjoyed my dive into the British music scene. I remember my friend Evan (not “99 Problems” Evan) showed me Stormzy’s “Standard” and it was then, I was introduced to Grime. Chicago has so many different creative scenes and that sort of electro-dance scene that’s heavily inspired by the one across the pond was lively. Skepta and Stormzy were the big two, but as an American, that was my introduction. Now I go thru GRM and the Daily Duppy’s to find artists, add them to playlists, and let the algorithm do its work, and it’s led me to a refreshing new personal resurgence of Rap music, not only from the UK, but from around the world.

“Life just feels like a mess right now, just know it gets tiring cuz, Man are retirin’ opps, I can’t get got by the firing squad…”

Greenwich native DC has built a steady name for himself. Coming off two incredible albums (Under The Influence in 2019 and In The Loop in 2021), he dropped new 2 singles in 2022. “The Latest”, a collaboration with producer emil, and “Firing Squad”, an honest and upfront take on having hopes and dreams while living in a world of mayhem. Produced by TSB and Teo, these two set the table for DC to shine at the highest level.

This track is a staple for me right now. DC’s ability to reflect on his past along with the anxieties that came with it is astounding. Opening up and admitting your fears, shortcomings, L’s, etc. is not what you hear a lot from rappers, but DC has always pushed the needle forward with his words. Not only with his bars but with a flow that weaves seamlessly with the production, it emphasizes that power in the punch of his vocals. I’m a huge DC fan, and this song goes right up with the best of his catalog. The video, set in high-contrast black and white, accompanies the track with a captivating story of its own. Shoutout to the whole creative team that worked on this because they really made a visual masterpiece.

DC is one of those rappers where it sounds like his music is really for himself more than anybody. Constantly thinking while having so much on your chest can break people, and I’m grateful that he shares his pain rather than running from it.

A beautiful piece of work.
