Sunset Nostalgia - Seth Sutch

The last time I wrote about Seth Sutch, I talked about his single “before the sunset” and how, at twenty-two years old, he seems primed to step into the conversations as one of the more polished rappers in the underground scene. He released his most recent project, “Sunset Nostalgia” on May 25th, a cohesive, dynamic story where Sutch shows all the sides of falling in and out of love and where those sorts of obligations sit on the totem pole while chasing greatness.
This isn’t exclusively a Hip-Hop project either. It’s a collection of both that classic Seth Sutch rap you hear on “before the sunset”, along with a fusion of RnB influenced by the motifs of romance, beaches, and sunsets (i.e. “lately been singing, but really came up off rappin’, yeah…”). Tracks like “Sunset Drive” and “One Day” shows Sutch’s ability to write catchy lyrics and capture those moments in this new age of Pop-RnB. “Popstar!” is where he displays his confidence when he steps into other genres and makes them his own. There are songs like “All Grown Up” and “10,000 Hours”, reminding fans of the rap arsenal he has at his disposal. He has a little bit of something for all types of fans, but the DNA is still Seth Sutch.
The song’s themselves are impressive, but from start to finish, you hear the sounds of the beaches. Waves crashing and seagulls seagulling, really add to the project’s ecosystem, both visually with the cover art and sonically with the landscapes. You also get the occasional appearance from a mysterious woman’s voice, adding that additional layer of “situationship” in the story. The scenes and their motifs are set, and it allows for a little bit of space for the audience to draw their own conclusions.
Taking all this into consideration, “Sunset Nostalgia” is an open, transformative work that shows not only the dynamic range of Sutch’s creative abilities but also the knowledge he has of himself and the maturity to prioritize his wants and needs over others. Vices are like sirens. The ones from mythology. They put you in a trance and seduce you until you’re pulled underneath the water. When I was his age, I didn’t have the power or spiritual wherewithal to do it.
It’s inspiring to see people take the reins of their lives.
