When NSYNC and The Backstreet Boys were exploding on the scene, no other sound was hotter, and these dudes were everywhere. Movie soundtracks, national & international television, CDs and posters in every store that sold music; the world couldn’t get enough. That was late 90s/early 2000s, and sure, times have changed, but there are artists today who really resonate with that sound. So much so, they’re looking to build, expand, and even put their own sauce on a genre that dominated airwaves across the world almost 30+ years ago.
When asked for the story behind their name, it’s fairly simple. “Will’s Asian and Ed’s blonde… so yeah,” they told platform Have Ya Heard? (link to their Q+A with asianblonde.) and with the release of their self titled EP, asianblonde., the two have spring boarded to the front of the new pop conversation. With six tracks and their signature “lover boy pop” style, asianblonde’s poised for a launch that could rival anything coming out of Cape Carnival. Their ability to move fluidly between powerful, earth moving ballads (“hazel”) to classic London house (“run away”) to upbeat, hip shaking music (“925” feat. Tsuyunoshi & Mayn), they’ve shown how polished and confidant they feel in their, and their team’s, decision making skills when it comes to developing and fleshing out records.
It’s been a long time since I heard something that was sonically this clean, that’s gives this type of feeling, from individuals as young these cats. This project makes me feel young again. I know I’m 28 and people will laugh at my fake oldness, but this injection of youth was needed for me. Discipline is rare, especially among the world of creative talent nowadays by people of all ages, from all backgrounds, from every corner for the world. I didn’t have that patience when I was younger and asianblonde’s ability and willingness to set up the plan and execute is something that all artists and their teams should take notes from.
