HAIKU - michael sneed

Bay Area native Michael Sneed is captivating. His track record speaks for itself. Look at his YouTube page, and you’ll see the slew of songs and music videos going as far back as four years ago. Sneed understands the marathon and what level you need to play at if you want to have your own corner of the universe. His most recent project Junior Varsity Blues debuted April 21st. Q soulful sample-driven saga of both the sadness and the hope that comes with life on the JV level. In the run-up to his project’s release, Sneed dropped a short visual for his song “Haiku.”

“This is a haiku, that is inspired by you, it’s nothing like you…”

A soft-spoken beginning soon quickly turns into a passionate confession, with Sneed divulging feelings using the arsenal of his vocabulary to paint a picture in vivid detail. Less than a minute and a half is plenty of time to run it back about five times to really understand all the nuances of his storytelling, The soulful production provides an excellent assist to the tone of Sneed’s voice and the mood of the story as a whole. It grips you from the jump and the visual provides a different piece of the story that listeners alone wouldn’t recognize. Every bar is a haiku (Well, most of it at least) which is one of those “creative diamonds” that artists like to put in their work, sort of snuck in like easter eggs, just to see if you’re paying attention.

Haikus have existed for thousands of years and have held that 5-7-5 function as a stipulation to the name, and for millennia, poets have been able to tell all types of stories, and this is a beautiful example of both the craft of poetry and Hip-Hop, which is one of my favorite genres to digest.

I bump Future when I’m spiteful too though. I don’t think there’s anything like it.
