Venus In Mercury - Gabe ‘Nandez

I’ve been introduced to a bunch of different genres this year and that was my M.O. when I started this whole Boolah Radio thing. My music range was so limited and I knew that there was more out there, but Hip-Hop will always carry the flame for me. Another appreciation I’ve developed is the love for how people curate their visual brand and how they weave their creative influences from the past and the present into themselves. It’s even made me look at how to curate mine better. It’s hard work, and the hard work isn’t immediately rewarded. Or maybe it already rewarded you.

“Venus In Mercury, hang high, clouded competitions of crowds of people that stand by, hands high!”

New York based rapper Gabe ‘Nandez is part sage/part storyteller. The evidence of his spirituality is sprinkled in his verses, finding guidance from his family, ancestral lineage, life experiences, and Mother Earth herself. With production provided by Argov that feels like a Clint Eastwood movie if Alchemist was the conductor, Gabe ‘Nandez works his strengths. His writing dynamics coupled with the ability to weave these intricate stories of celestial enlightenment into the nuances of a rap verse, is impressive to say the least. Almost acting as the tour guide going farther down the rabbit hole. You can feel the influences of some of rap’s grandmasters, in particular MF DOOM, and for two minutes, ‘Nandez channels everything he has into this thunderous performance.

Speaking of Clint Eastwood, this visual was done by Losmose, and it matches the cadence and styling of both the music and the lyrics so well that this is one of those things I was talking about at the beginning. Coming to appreciate and respect not only the art itself, but the work it took to get it to the public, from everybody involved. It really does take a team to execute, and this joint is one that seals the deal for me.
