WTSL - City James & Matt Miggz
Music Video (Still Shot) - WTSL
In my lifetime, the defining factor in anybody is whether you’re passionate or not. Do you strive to do something in your lifetime? It’s not really something you need to prove to anybody, only to yourself, but I’ve come to learn that the biggest impressions are the ones left when you’re doing and communicating what you love.
“How long does it take to get rich? I’ve been broke so long that I don’t even wanna spend it…”
“Go For Broke” reads one of the two T-Shirts on City James’s website, www.cityjames.com, and this track “WTSL” feels like that motto personified. From James’s gritty, standout vocals, to Miggz’s clean production and his absurd verse, to the three minutes forty-six-second single-shot video, City James + Matt Miggz have all boots on the accelerator.
His voice alone carries the weight of past lifetimes, and James uses this track almost as a journal entry to empty off some of those emotional anchors. Through handcuffs, revolution, and even death, James leverages his authenticity with skilled lyricism and a story that’s sure to resonate with anybody who’s seen hard times. I even said that this song feels like the heartbeat of a revolutionary movement. That’s what great rap music does sometimes. It’s galvanizing, and Miggz’s verse is just as powerful, juxaposed from the sound that James brings, all while staying in that same sort of confident, “hold my nuts” attitude. Some call it arrogance, some call it self-esteem, but whatever you want to call it, it translates easily, creating this sort of back-and-forth with verses between two top-tier talents and two close friends.
I was on a call after a meeting time had fallen through, and we really resonated with the idea of “we had to learn how to work hard”. I sound stupid repeating myself so much, but I really learned I was just a people person and used life as the medium to communicate the things I’m passionate about.
What a world we live in.
